  • How often should I have my septic tank cleaned?

It is generally recommended that your system be serviced every two years. However

dwellings with three or more should consider having it serviced more frequently. If you have a

garbage disposal and use it more than sparingly, your system should be pumped on a yearly

basis. Older homes with small, older systems may require pumping more frequently. Any

households with increased water usage (yes, I’m looking at you babies and teenagers!) may

want to consider a more frequent cleaning. Pumping the tank not only removes the solids that

settle and float, but also provides the homeowner with a quick survey of the tank by a

    professional in the field.

  • How close do you need to get to the septic tank?

    • Conserve water to reduce the amount of wastewater to be treated and disposed.
    • Repair leaking faucets and toilets promptly.
    • Discharge only biodegradable wastes into system.               Divert down spouts and other surface water away from your soil treatment area.
    •  Keep your septic tank cover accessible for tank inspections and pumping.
    • Have your effluent screen inspected and cleaned once a year.
    • Have your septic tank pumped regularly and inspected for leaks and cracks.
    •  Compost your garbage or put it in the trash instead of putting it down the sink.
    • Call a professional when you have questions or problems.

  • My drains are gurgling — what is wrong?

    • Flush sanitary napkins, tampons, diapers, wipes, cat litter and such products.
    • Dump solvents, oils, paints, disinfectants or other poisons down the drain.
    • Dig in your treatment area or build anything over it.                 Plant anything over your treatment area except grass.
    • Drive over your soil treatment area or compact the soil in any way.
    • Use a garbage disposal unless your septic tank was sized to handle the required sludge storage volume.
